Danone India Launches Protinex Diabetes Care to Address the Nutritional Needs of Indians with Diabetes

Less than one out of four people with diabetes meet their daily protein and fibre requirements, finds a Danone study

New Delhi, India: Danone India, with its mission ‘to bring health through food to as many people as possible,’ today announced the launch of Protinex Diabetes Care with an aim to address the nutritional requirements of Indians with diabetes. The scientifically developed product aims to provide adequate protein and fiber, which are important nutrients in managing blood sugar levels.

To understand the needs of people with diabetes, Danone India commissioned a research among 1000 respondents across India which was conducted by IPSOS, a leading marketing research firm. The survey aimed at assessing the nutrition awareness and nutrient intake among people with type 2 diabetes and identifying the relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary self-care behavior in Indian diabetic patients. The survey findings revealed that over 92% of respondents knew that protein and fiber in the diets are essential to manage diabetes. However, daily nutrient intake assessment using Nutri Calculator, a tool developed by Danone with nutrition experts, highlighted that only 14.8% and 21.2% people with diabetes were consuming the daily required protein and fiber respectively. Nearly 60% of respondents were unaware about food sources that have high or low Glycemic Index, to make a right choice as awareness about this is beneficial for diabetes management.

Elucidating about the benefits of protein and fiber in people with diabetes, Dr Amit Khandeparkar, Head, Medical Affairs at Danone India said, “74 million Indians are living with Diabetes and currently, India has the second highest diabetes cases in the world, and this number is projected to reach around 124 million by 2045 as per International Diabetes Federation Atlas. Factors such as higher fat to muscle ratio, inappropriate diet and lifestyle accelerate the diabetes onset. Consuming a diet high in protein, fiber & low Glycemic Index can help manage blood sugar fluctuations and weight thus helping the individual live with diabetes in a better way.”

Protinex Diabetes Care is packed with the highest amount of protein in this category and it also has high fiber. Both these nutrients are helpful in the management of blood sugar levels and thus help diabetic patients lead a healthier life. It is fortified with 26 essential vitamins & minerals and is available in Vanilla flavor. Protinex Diabetes Care is a healthy food option for people with diabetes as it is low in fat, contains no added sugar and thus provides lower calories. It contains no artificial sweeteners which is an added advantage for people with diabetes. Moreover, it is the only product in the powder nutrition category with low Glycemic Index (GI) of 17, that can help manage blood sugar levels.

Speaking about the launch of the new product, Mr. Sriram Padmanabhan, Director Marketing, Danone India said, “At Danone, we endeavor to offer products that are relevant to local consumer needs. Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in India but equally shocking is the lack of awareness and inadequate intake of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients in the diets of people with diabetes. Protinex Diabetes Care demonstrates Danone’s commitment to inspire healthier eating and drinking habits among adults.”

With this launch, the company has entered Rs. 165 Crore health food drink market for diabetics. The product is retailed across India. It is going to be available in 200g and 400g packs across modern trade, general trade, and e-commerce channels.

National Survey Finds That Almost 60 Percent Consumers Are Eager to Purchase Alcoholic Beverages Online - YouGov Study

97% Consumers Have Faced Challenges When Buying Alcohol – Crowded Alcohol Stores a Big Concern

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Maharashtra leads the way in-home delivery of alcoholic beverages, with 1 in 5 respondents indicating this as their most often used mode

Safety and convenience have been cited as key reasons to prefer the e-commerce channel to buy alcoholic beverages

The online channel offers consumers more choice leading to innovation within the category and incremental revenue opportunities for state governments

COVID-19 has fast-tracked the digitization of businesses in India, but can all industries be channelled online? Is e-commerce truly the next step for every industry? YouGov, one of the world's leading full-service market research companies, surveyed to understand the consumer sentiment and interest towards the availability of alcoholic beverages through the e-commerce channel. The extensive survey received around 2,000 responses from consumers across five states.

The survey's findings brought to life the fact that 97% consumers have faced challenges while buying alcohol. Responses to the survey highlighted safety issues, cramped/ crowded stores, general inconvenience in terms of time, effort, and lack of variety as top factors contributing to the underwhelming experience of buying alcoholic beverages from traditional outlets. Therefore, it is unsurprising to see that 57% consumers say they are likely to purchase alcohol from online platforms if made available in their states. For example - consumers in Maharashtra, one of the few progressive states where the government has permitted home delivery of alcohol beverages, have swiftly hopped onto this bandwagon, with 90% stating that they have had a positive shopping experience and generates an additional revenue stream for state governments and the entire industry as a whole.

The survey highlighted that 58% of the consumers log onto e-commerce channels in general due to the availability of a diverse range of products, opening inroads for high-decibel opportunities in product innovation and premiumization.

From a state-to-state perspective, 62% respondents from Maharashtra showed a higher preference of purchasing alcohol through existing home delivery channels, closely followed by Haryana and Chandigarh at 59% where consumers are keen to order through e-commerce channels. This highlights the potential Maharashtra has to drive this growth while also paving the way for more states to follow the home delivery or online model of alcohol purchase based on its success. Fueling this change, as we move forward, 61% consumers indicate that they would want to continue using e-commerce platforms even post the pandemic, and 52% noted that e-commerce platforms have been of enormous help during the pandemic when one can avoid stepping out to crowded stores.

Another interesting point revealed by the survey was the alcohol drinking preferences of consumers where Beer emerged as the favoured drink of choice where 43% respondents indicated a preference for the beverage.

The survey findings indicate that the Indian consumer and the alcohol beverage industry is waiting for policymakers to offer the ecosystem and the much-needed efficiency by adopting international best practices through a revolutionary shift towards e-commerce. Globally as well, the pandemic has catapulted the value of the e-commerce channel for alcohol. Estimates by IWSR, the leading source of data and analysis on the beverage alcohol market, has revealed that the beverage alcohol e-commerce value has grown by 42% in 2020 and will reach US$24 billion. There have been notable increases in key markets, including France, where strong growth for this channel was witnessed, Italy where the environment for this channel was historically unfavorable, the last year witnessed robust growth with on-trade wholesalers moving into the channel, Argentina, where e-commerce offerings were rapidly developed to implement strict lockdowns and finally, China where the channel benefitted from strict movement restrictions. Given India's favourable demographics, the e-commerce model for alcohol could prove to be fruitful as it opens new revenue streams, promotes moderation, offers accessibility and availability to more choice, and subsequently, innovation.

Survey Demographics:

2000 responses were received from five key states Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. 70% respondents were men while 30% respondents were women. YouGov’s online panel of 200,000 Indian panelists and all participants are validated citizens who had to be registered with YouGov to participate in this survey.

*Home delivery of alcohol is available in Maharasthra amongst the states surveyed

Drone Spraying in Sangli Sugarcane Cultivation, Social Impact Entrepreneur Introduces New Trends in MH Agriculture

Prateek Patil has implemented a line of drone technology for the purposes of spraying fertilizers - 3200 acres of sugarcane area covered, benefiting more than 2000 farmers in the Walwa region.

Sangli, Maharashtra, India

Sangli District has been grounds for pioneering agriculture and irrigation works in Western Maharashtra. From the cooperative movement to drip irrigation, innovation has been a sign of the cultivation in the region. The drone spraying technology introduced by Prateek Patil and adopted by the Rajarambapu Sugar Factory in Sangli in 2020-2021 has not only reduced time and efforts of the farmer but also increases profitability.

To launch this initiative, Prateek conducted 22 ‘ShetkariParisamvads’ where he met over 4,900 farmers to incept the idea and talk about the benefits of this technology. According to him, “acceptance to new methods is often the most difficult step in the Indian agricultural landscape, and to get their willingness to try new schemes is one of the challenging parts."

Prateek has been involved with agro-innovation and has conducted several initiatives to aid and propagate drip irrigation. These meetings across Sangli propelled the conversation and attracted many farmers to come and test out the drone technology.

Saving Time, Money and Water

Conventionally the farmer sprays his crops physically. Even with hired manual labour, this is a costly and time-consuming affair. In the manual spraying method, for 1-acre sugarcane, a farmer would spend around ₹1000 on spraying labour charges along with 200 litres of water and a higher quantity of chemicals.

To address these problems, coupled with the lack of labourers during COVID 19, Prateek decided to introduce this technique. He took it upon himself to test the technology and setup a partnership with a regional manufacturing company. The drones are given out on rent at very affordable rates saving almost 40% of total costs. It utilizes only 10 litres of water, saving almost 150 litres. Additionally, now it takes only 5-10 mins to spray fertilizers and permitted pesticides on 1 acre of Sugarcane as opposed to 4-5 hours earlier. Crops at any height can be effectively reached and 4 nozzles guarantee a comprehensive and equal distribution of fertilizers and pesticides.

It is flexible across climate conditions and allows for uniform spraying of entire fields. A reduction of 25-50% in the quantity of fertilizers and pesticides used has been observed after adapting drone spraying and the quality of yield of crops has been found to increase by 20-30%, which in turn has translated to more income.

Generating Employment

Use of this drone technology also has an additional advantage of generating employment for the local youth in sectors of manufacturing and operations. The Sugar Factory has partnered with a company called Chatak Innovations for assembling and operating the drones. Labour force hiring for the drone operation facility like Drone Pilots & Co-Pilots, Cars & Drivers for the drone’s transport and the supervision team is facilitated under the leadership of Prateek Patil. Employment numbers for assembling and operating is expected to increase as more farmers adopt the drone technology.

Currently, the Factory uses a 10 litre Octocopter drone. After conducting an initial pilot, this technology is being introduced on a greater scale to farmers of the region. Till date, more than 3,200 acres of area has been covered by drone spraying benefiting more than 2000 farmers of the region. Each drone is currently covering 9 to 12 acres in a day and this is a first of its kind exercise conducted by a sugar factory in Maharashtra, stated by Vikas Deshmukh (Director-Vasantdada Sugar Institute).

This initiative opens a great path into precision agriculture in Maharashtra, providing new ways for farmers to manage crops, ensure the efficiency of inputs such as water, fertilizers and maximize productivity, quality, and yield. As a part of Prateek Patil’s vision, there are plans for the Sugar Factory to further utilize drones for Crop Scouting. This method gives a 97% accurate estimate of the Sugarcane crop’s yield. There are also plans to utilize drones to estimate pests and diseases in crops, conduct nutrient analysis of the soil by analyzing pictures of the crop, NDVI, monitor irrigation and also estimate the total area covered under Sugarcane in the region.
